Our Story

Mothers to IBCLCs

Here at Lactation Cymru we have 2 IBCLCs!

It all started in 2011, with the birth of Karen's third child.  After some difficulties she decided to become a breastfeeding peer counsellor with her local health trust.  She then started volunteering at her local support group - in Llangefni supporting many parents who came to visit every fortnight.  One of those mums, was Amy.  Having difficulty with feeding her first child in 2012, she went to Llangefni for support.  Karen was that support. As time went on, and several visits later Amy decided to also become a peer supporter a year after Karen and then helped to restart and run the support group in Holyhead.

Following this, over the next few years the support groups on Anglesey kept going, with extension into Bangor and the shift to being part of the ABM family too.

Amy and Karen both became mother supporters with the ABM, then progressing to their breastfeeding counsellor course - Karen doing this in almost record breaking speedy time and Amy almost record breaking slow time! (Had a few babies in that time!)

We both spend a lot of time volunteering locally and nationally in breastfeeding education and are passionate about ensuring as many families as possible are supported.  We have supported about 600 families on the National Breastfeeding Helpline and spent thousands of hours supporting in person.

Volunteering is at the core of what we do and we are dedicated to providing support and education as much as we can.

In 2019 we made the decision to push to that gold standard qualification - International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Many hours of virtual meetings happened where we would study and research. After a little coronavirus blip (ok, major covid blip!) we both sat the exam in September 2020. A stressful experience in itself! We found out just before Christmas that year that we passed! Yay! So then on 1/1/2021 Lactation Cymru was launched!

Onward and upward, and to help many, many more families!
